Do you want to know more about the Geology degree? This article is for you!

In this article, we share information about the college degree in Geology. We know that when considering a college degree, it is important to be aware of the field, to know what it is about, and to know as much about it as possible. Here we want to contribute to your search and support you with a couple of basic facts about Geology.

What is geology?

It is a natural science dedicated to studying the planet Earth. The objective of geology is to understand the physical composition and the internal and external structure of the planet, as well as to understand the different processes and dynamics that have allowed its evolution from its formation to the present.

Geology is also known as geological sciences, because this science has several branches specialized in specific aspects of the Earth, such as climate, mineral exploration, tectonic dynamics, among others.

Geology students have theoretical knowledge of the planet, and also study topics in specific fields such as geotechnics and civil engineering, to mention an example.

What are the different areas of study of geology?

As we have mentioned, this science has several areas that specialize in specific issues on planet Earth. The areas of geology are the following ones:

  • Geophysics: it is based on the knowledge and perspectives of physics to study the Earth. It studies fundamental dynamics such as reflection and refraction, gravity, electromagnetism, radioactivity, among others.
  • Geochemistry: is the area based on the knowledge and tools of chemistry for the material understanding of the Earth.
  • Petroleum Geology: focuses on studying aspects related to petroleum such as the formation of deposits, their location, the estimation of their reserves, as well as their exploration and extraction.
  • Hydrology: studies the water that is deposited under the earth's surface and the interaction it has with soils, rocks, minerals, and wetlands.
  • Stratigraphy: is the area of geology in charge of interpreting, ordering, and understanding the remains of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks, as well as the order of horizontal layers that make up the soil.
  • Tectonics: studies the deep structures of the earth's crust.
  • Meteorology: is the area of geology in charge of studying atmospheric phenomena and trying to predict their development.
  • Speleology: is responsible for studying the formation and morphology of caves and other natural cavities in the subsoil.
  • Seismology: is the science in charge of studying tremors, volcanoes, and earthquakes, as well as studying the tectonic displacements that produce them.
  • Paleontology: it is responsible for the study of past life on our planet, through fossil evidence found in the subsoil.

This degree has a wide variety of areas that gives students different areas of job opportunities in different fields and in different locations around the world. This degree also tends to support and join other degrees such as biology and geography. It may not be a hugely popular degree, but it is certainly an important college degree that brings useful information to our society.
